What Is Birthright?
Birthright was founded in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in 1968 by Louise Summerhill, a busy housewife, and mother of seven children. Louise regretted the fact that some young unmarried mothers were belittled or ostracized by their relatives: “I can never see anything wrong with any of them.” Louise recreated the supportive homelike environment they deserved to have.
The grassroots response to her idea was overwhelming, and the Toronto chapter quickly grew into Birthright International, the world’s first international crisis pregnancy service. Birthright International now works with more than 400 chapters worldwide, including Canada, the United States, and others in South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, and Colombia.
About Birthright St. Charles
Birthright has been in St. Charles since 1981 when we started as a branch of Birthright Counseling St. Louis. In 2010 we became an independent organization to support the needs of the growing St. Charles community.
Birthright takes a professional, compassionate approach toward helping women through their pregnancy dilemmas.
We have master’s level professional counselors with the knowledge to review all the options with you. They can also refer you to helpful resources that know how to help you and assist with the physical, financial, and emotional support you need. Women in crisis pregnancy situations may feel alone or boxed in; our counselors are here to support and empower women to make thoughtful decisions they can feel confident in.
Birthright is a fully independent organization not affiliated with any church or public agency. Its name and logo are trademarks. We have been serving women in the greater St. Charles community for 40 years.
