This month, as we celebrate Independence Day, let us take a moment to reflect on ourselves.
Let us look deep within to recognize the dependencies that might be holding us back from becoming the best version of ourselves.
Let’s take meaningful steps to becoming “independent”- choosing not to rely on others for our validation, our joy, and our strength.
What Does It Mean to be Independent?
Being an independent person doesn’t mean walking this world alone. Independence is more than being able to take care of yourself physically or financially. It’s knowing your self-worth. It’s about understanding and using your voice, and being proud of who you are – who you are becoming.
Let’s not confuse “independence” with selfishness (which is a total disregard of others). To be independent is to be self-reliant and to prioritize one’s total well-being, while still valuing and respecting others around you.
It takes strength and determination to grow beyond your current level. It involves stepping outside of your comfort zone and being honest about the issues, people, experiences, decisions, or even preferences that may be preventing you from moving forward. Taking time to reflect on setbacks and learning to identify potential hindrances to self-improvement will reduce the likelihood of self-doubt and giving up on reaching your full potential. It’s about navigating life’s complexities and starting the journey of personal growth.
The thought of “facing your fears” or “cleaning out your closet” may seem scary or just too much work, but the effort is worth it for your health and a better you.
You Can Do it!
It takes a great deal of courage to embark on the journey of self-reflection and healing. Sure, it can be tough, and it’s easy to stay where you are, but that’s one of many things in life that’s worth fighting for.
Here are some empowering ways to move toward independence and a stronger, healthier you:
- Set and respect your boundaries
- Schedule self-care
- Nourish your body and mental health
- Delegate tasks, if possible.
- Use calendars, alarms, and routines
- Stay focused and persevere
- Communicate your needs
- Hold yourself accountable
- Remember, life is better when we can do it with others.
