The holidays are here — that wonderful, chaotic time when tables fill with food, laughter, and sometimes… a few tricky conversations. We pass the rolls and opinions in equal measure. Between bites of pumpkin pie, someone always brings up that topic. You know the one.
But what if this year, we brought something new to the table — not just casseroles and cranberry sauce, but conversation that truly matters?
Because words, like recipes, can nourish or harm depending on how they’re made. And just like we measure sugar and spice, we can measure our words, too — using a little tool we elves (and wise humans) called THINK:
✳️ T – True
Before you speak, pause and ask: How certain am I that this is actually true?
Truth is tricky — it often gets tangled up in how we feel. Anger, excitement, hurt, or passion can cloud what’s real. Take a step back. Breathe.
If your words bring clarity instead of confusion, if they shine light instead of heat — that’s when truth becomes something worth sharing.
🤝 H – Helpful
Is what you’re saying truly helpful?
Not just to you — but to the person in front of you?
Sometimes being helpful isn’t about fixing anything. It’s about listening well, offering empathy, or simply being present.
Ask yourself: Will my words leave things better than I found them? If the answer is yes, go ahead — speak kindness into the moment.
🌟 I – Inspiring
When you speak, do you build others up or tear them down?
The holidays bring together people with different stories, styles, and scars. Instead of judging what we don’t understand, what if we looked a little deeper — for the creativity, courage, or quiet strength in others?
Words have the power to help someone grow. This season, let your words be a gift — one that uses respectful dialogue and helps others become more of who they’re meant to be.
🕊️ N – Necessary
Let’s face it — the world is loud.
Before adding more noise, ask: Does this really need to be said?
Sometimes silence is stronger than sound. A gentle nod, a knowing smile, or a quiet “I’m here for you” can speak volumes. Not every thought deserves an audience — but the ones that bring peace usually do.
💗 K – Kind
Hard things still need to be said, but how you say them changes everything.
You can be honest without being harsh, truthful without being tactless.
Kindness doesn’t water down truth — it delivers it in a way that can actually be heard.
Before you speak, imagine how you would want to hear it.
Kindness costs nothing, but means everything.
Pulling Up a Chair at the Birthright Table
At Birthright St. Charles, our counselors live out these very principles every day. They listen with compassion, speak truth with gentleness, and help women find clarity, courage, and hope.
This holiday season, as you gather around your own tables, remember: the most meaningful conversations aren’t the loudest ones — they’re the ones filled with grace.
Because when we choose to THINK before we speak — to be True, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary, and Kind — we create space where hearts can heal, hope can grow, and love can do its quiet, beautiful work.
